Wellspo: Deliciously Ella

Ella Mills is 26 years old. She is the Founder and Creative Director of Deliciously Ella.

She is the author of 3 bestselling cookbooks, has 3 deli's and started a line of Deliciously Ella Products.

I have been following Deliciously Ella for years and she has been a huge inspiration for me. All of her recipes are equally as delicious as they are nutritious and she is a great motivation for anyone turning to food after hard times.  I hope to be able to do what she does one day.

What sparked your interest in health?

In 2011 I got very ill with a condition that affected my autonomic nervous system. I was put on lots of medication but struggled to gain control of my symptoms, which affected everything from my heart rate to my blood pressure, digestion, immune system and chronic fatigue. I really struggled with the debilitating impact this had on my physical health, which in turn really affected my mental health.

After about a year I hit my rock bottom and started to look at what I could do to help myself. I became interested in health and wellness at this point and began exploring the space. It took a while to feel the impact of a big lifestyle shift but after a few years I was able to come off my medication and have kept most symptoms at bay since then.

A typical day on your plate?

Deliciously Ella Porridge

For breakfast I normally have either a bowl of bircher muesli with coconut yoghurt, almond milk, peanut butter and banana or an easy smoothie with spinach, oats, nut butter, banana, berries and almond milk. Both are so quick and easy.

Lunch is normally either leftovers, recipe testing in the office or something from our deli – I love the five bean stew with corn bread and slaw at the moment.

Dinner is the meal that I vary the most, I love spending time playing around with recipes then. In the winter I normally make warming dahls, spicy curries, bean chillies or veggie stews, which I serve with miso brown rice.

When it comes to snacks I can’t live without our ginger energy balls, spoonfuls of peanut butter, avocado on toast and hummus with crackers.

Your top five foods for better health?

Deliciously Ella Sweet Potatoes

I don’t think there are five foods that are infinitely better than any others, you’ve got to find things that you love. My five favourite foods flavour wise are:

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Avocados
  • Dates
  • Almonds
  • Oats.

One food you could not live without?

Oats – I love porridge, bircher muesli, oaty smoothies, granola, oat milk, oaty cookies and flapjacks. They’re so versatile.

Have you a motto you live by?

You get back what you put in. It’s what my mum always said it to me growing up and I really believe in the concept: the more time, love, energy and passion you put into anything the more you’ll get back from it. You can’t expect magic to happen without putting everything into what you’re doing.

Who and/or what inspires you?

My readers are my biggest inspiration, I love the Deliciously Ella community – they’re so incredibly open and supportive.

Your favourite type of exercise?

Yoga, I love a dynamic vinyasa class. I also love walking and try to walk everywhere, plus walking our dog Austin is one of my favourite ways to relax.

How often do you exercise?

Deliciously Ella Yoga

I try to get to yoga as much as I can, I’d go everyday if I could – I love how it makes me feel. It helps me breathe out all my stress, remove any pressure I’m feeling and generally calm me down.

How do you take care of your mental health?

Yoga really helps me with that, I try to meditate in the mornings too for ten minutes before I turn my phone on.

Some advice to your 16-year- old self?

Deliciously Ella

Don’t take anything too seriously, everything works out ok in the end. Besides focusing on the solution not the problem always takes you to a better place much quicker.

What are the key things you have learned in your journey into health and wellbeing?

To find what suits you and what makes you happy. We’re all different and that’s a great thing. Make sure you find a way of life that satisfies you mentally and physically, because for anything to be sustainable it has to be enjoyable.
