Wellspo: Melissa Eaton
Melissa (Mel for short) is the owner of the popular instagram account Eaton_Balanced.
Mel turned 30 this year, 'but age is just a number right'?
In 2010 she graduated uni as a teacher majoring in Dance and Performance studies. She worked in Sydney for a few years as a teacher, as well as cheerleading for the NRL Bulldogs.
Mel then moved to the UK where she really started to work on performing. She would take everything and anything she could to do with entertaining including dancing, cheerleading (for the London Cheerleaders), acting, body doubling and even extras work.
Mel has since moved back to Aus and is back at uni studying to be a Nutritionist (and possibly a dietitian in the future), and although she deeply miss performing, she is loving it.
I have been following Mel for awhile and love her instagram. Her recipes are amazing. I am so happy to have been able to interview Mel as she is a huge inspiration of mine.
What sparked your interest in health?
I discovered I was lactose intolerant when I was around 17, so this really sparked my interest in food as I had to be so aware about what I was eating, but my interest in health probably started a little later in my early 20’s.
A typical day on your plate?
Oats for breakfast. Usually with greek yogurt, cocoa powder, blueberries, banana and nut butter, but I do try and mix it up.
Lunch is usually some form of leftovers from the night before, or avo, veg and eggs on toast. On days when I have a bigger appetite, I love snacking on nuts, rice cakes, fruit (especially blueberries), popcorn, kombucha, and yogurt.
Dinner is usually left overs, food I’ve prepped or most commonly baked veg and some form of protein whether it’s meat or legumes! I also add hummus to everything haha.
Your top five foods for better health?
A hard question! Everything in balance. So I would say, a good variety of fruit and vegetables, proteins, carbs and fats.
One food you could not live without?
Another hard question, there are so many. But I’ll say sweet potato, I love it.
Have you a motto you live by?
let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food
Who and/or what inspires you?
My parents. My dad runs a very successful business, he works SO hard and watching it grow has been amazing. This may not sound real, but I’m also inspired all the time by Instagram. Every time someone makes one of my recipes, it makes me so happy and inspires me to keep growing my own business!
Your favourite type of exercise?
How often do you exercise?
Every week day, and sometimes a walk on the weekend.
How do you take care of your mental health?
Exercise and eating well. If I don’t do either of these, I really notice the difference.
Some advice to your 16-year-old self?
Don’t give up, trust the process and that everything you do will lead you to where you’re meant to be! And stop caring so much about what everyone else is thinking.
What are the key things you have learned in your journey into health and wellbeing?
That balance and moderation in all avenues of life is the key. Do what makes you happy, eat what makes you feel good, and don’t feel pressure to be someone who you’re not.
