Wellspo; Leahs Plate
About 5 years ago I wasn't feeling great about myself and knew I needed a lifestyle change. I wanted to be healthier in general, so started cooking most of my meals at home and dove into research about healthy eating. I immediately started to feel better and after feeling so much clearer and having more energy I knew I wanted to live the rest of my life like this.
A typical day on your plate?
I always like to have something sweet for breakfast so I usually start my day with a big smoothie, oatmeal with berries and nut butter or yogurt bowl. If it's a smoothie I try to pack tons of veggies into it. Some days I enjoy a hot cup of black coffee and other days I've been really into matcha lattes.
My favourite lunch is scrambled eggs with avocado toast - that's a go-to for me. Dinner is usually grilled fish or chicken with a lot of roasted vegetables. I roast a huge batch of veggies every Sunday to have for the week. If I'm hungry in between meals I'll snack on some fresh fruit or homemade energy bites.
Your top five foods for better health?
Blueberries, avocado, spinach, almond butter and sweet potatoes.
One food you could not live without?
Bananas - I use them in my smoothies and oatmeal.
Have you a motto you live by?
My motto in life is do whatever makes you HAPPY! There's a famous quote by John Lennon and I couldn't agree with it more: "They asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life."
Who and/or what inspires you?
I am constantly inspired on a daily basis by the wonderful accounts I follow on Instagram. I get wonderful healthy meal ideas just by scrolling through my feed. Also, my husband constantly inspires me to do the right thing, work hard and be a good person. He's a wonderful role model.
Your favourite type of exercise?
Definitely yoga. It calms my mind and is a great workout at the same time.
How do you take care of your mental health?
I truly believe taking yoga classes on a weekly basis drastically improves my mental health. 8 hours of sleep per night will also do wonders for your mental health. I'm also a big believer that holding in your problems is not good and that you should always talk to someone about any internal struggles.
Some advice to your 16-year-old self?
Don't be so hard on yourself and just enjoy life and its beautiful journey. Spend time with those who value you and also make you a priority and ditch the people who don't. Believe in yourself and always go for what you want in life. Also, if a problem seems really big at the time it's important to know in a few years from now that same problem won't seem so monumental.
What are the key things you have learned in your journey into health and wellbeing?
The most important thing I've learned is that life is all about balance. Just because you're living a healthy lifestyle doesn't mean you can't splurge on a treat from time to time and enjoy yourself. If you have a piece of cake at a birthday party you shouldn't feel any guilt about it or mentally beat yourself up over it. Enjoy the cake and move on :)
